Todavia a modalidade terapêutica mais comumente utilizada no combate a esse tipo de câncer é a radioterapia. A radiação ionizante possui uma alta eficácia em erradicar células cancerígenas, contudo a radiação pode atingir os tecidos sadios localizados próximo ao tumor em função de estarem inclusos no campo de radiação ocasionando efeitos adversos na cavidade oral. As sequelas orais provenientes da radioterapia podem aparecer durante e após a terapia de radiação e são determinantes para qualidade de vida dos pacientes. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar os principais efeitos adversos que acometem a cavidade oral decorrentes do tratamento radioterápico do câncer de cabeça e pescoço e as condutas realizadas pelo cirurgião-dentista para prevenir e tratar dessas complicações. O estudo foi realizado com base em uma revisão de literatura e conclui que o cirurgião-dentista possui um papel significativo para a manutenção da qualidade de vida desses pacientes, desde o diagnóstico até o tratamento das manifestações orais que podem aparecer durante e após o tratamento radioterápico.Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are therapeutic modalities available for the treatment of patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer, which can be used alone or in combination. However, the most commonly used therapeutic modality in the fight against this type of cancer is radiotherapy. Ionizing radiation is highly effective in eradicating cancer cells, but radiation can reach healthy tissues located close to the tumor because it is even in the radiation field, causing adverse effects in the oral cavity. Oral sequelae from radiotherapy may appear during and after radiation therapy and are crucial for patients' quality of life. The objective of this study was to identify the main adverse effects that affect the oral cavity resulting from radiotherapy for head and neck cancer and the actions taken by the dentist to prevent and treat these complications.
