Considerando-se o avanço da economia de mercado e a política neoliberal, parte-se da hipótese de que as IES (Instituições de Ensino Superior), ao priorizarem a lógica capitalista, tendem a promover uma educação que privilegia o conhecimento pragmático, instrumental e normativo, formando estudantes estritamente para o mercado de trabalho e para o consumo, relegam a presença da arte a mero passatempo ou distração, banalizando-a e tirando dela seu potencial transformador e crítico. Através de pesquisa bibliográfica, discute-se a necessidade da arte (FISCHER) e algumas especificidades das artes de elite e popular e da arte para consumo (HELLER, LUKÁCS e ADORNO). A presença da arte na cidade de Sorocaba, centro focal deste estudo, e as influências dos poderes público e privado no fomento e patrocínio da arte na cidade e no currículo dos cursos universidades locais são também revistos, a ponto de se questionar se a presença de arte para o consumo representaria uma tensão na formação universitária, uma vez que não colabora para a formação crítica dos estudantes. Por fim, conclui-se que a arte é necessária no currículo universitário mas que, devido à formação voltada para o trabalho e para o encaixe na sociedade de consumo, as formas de arte mais presentes na cidade e na universidade são as formas alienantes, não sendo esse fato, um conflito, já que esse viés se encaixa aos propósitos da formação dos estudantes.The present work articulated to a greater research about the formation of the undergraduate student, carried out by the Group of Studies in Superior Education Program of Masters Course in Education of the University of Sorocaba (PPGE-Uniso), brings a reflection on the relations between the teaching of the art and the formation of the undergraduate students in Sorocaba city. Considering the advancement of the economy of market and the neoliberal politics, this study takes the hypothesis that IES (Superior Teaching Institutions), following the capitalist logic, have a tendency to promote an education that privileges the pragmatic, instrumental and prescriptive knowledge, forming students strictly for the labor market and for the consumption, they relegate the presence of the art at mere pastime or absentmindedness, when his potential transformer and critic and take away it of her. Through bibliographical inquiry, it is discussed the necessity of the art (FISCHER) and some specificity of the elite arts and popularly and of the art for consumption (HELLER, LUKÁCS and ADORNO). The presence of the art in the city of Sorocaba, focal centre of this study, and the influences of the public administration and deprived in the incitement and sponsorship of the art in the city and in the curriculum of the courses, local universities are also revised, to point of questioning if the presence of art for the consumption would represent a tension in the undergraduate formation, as soon as it does not collaborate for the critical formation of the students.
