Busca-se um entendimento dos motivos que levaram aquela entidade a dedicar-se à implantação de escolas e a apoiar políticas educacionais. A dissertação insere-se em uma análise das atas da Loja Maçônica Perseverança III, transcritas por José Aleixo Irmão, limitando-se as consultas àquele tema específico, ou seja, a educação. Foram analisadas, ainda, outras obras que tratam da história da educação naquele período. Como norte para a pesquisa, e definição de termos e conceitos operacionais, designou-se o conceito de história social estabelecido por Vieira; Peixoto; Khouri (2002) procurando levar em conta as várias dimensões do social, do econômico e do político.The object of this study is the political and social action of the Masonry, here represented by the Masonic Lodge Perseverança III (PIII), established in Sorocaba. The focus is on the Lodge’s acts regarding the schooling programs in that city, concentrating the attention on the so called Escola Noturna (Evening School), between the last years of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. The aim is to understand the reasons which led that Institution to dedicate to establishing schools and supporting educational policies. This work results from analysis of the PIII minutes, written by José Aleixo Irmão, and the research was limited exclusively to the matter of education. Other researches related to history of education in that period were also consulted.
